A Wonderful Retirement Party in Carlow — Real Event Showcase
After 35 years on the job, one Carlow family threw a garden marquee retirement party to remember — flower walls, fairy lights and a guestbook full of stories. Here's how they pulled it together.

Thirty-Five Years, One Unforgettable Send-Off
When a much-loved Carlow woman clocked out of her job for the very last time after 35 years, her family knew a card and a cake in the staff canteen wasn't going to cut it. Instead, they turned the back garden into a proper party venue — and the result was one of the warmest celebrations we've helped put together this year. It's exactly the kind of milestone worth marking properly, whether you're in Carlow, Athy or anywhere in between.
Setting Up the Garden
The family's garden backs onto a quiet lane just outside Carlow town, with plenty of flat lawn but no shelter from an Irish September evening. A 6m x 9m marquee solved that instantly, giving guests a dry, warm space to gather no matter what the weather did. Inside, round tables were dressed with crisp linen, and folding chairs were swapped for a run of chiavari chairs at the top table, so the guest of honour had a seat that actually looked the part.
The Photo Corner Everyone Used
Off to one side of the marquee, the family set up a blush-and-white flower wall as a backdrop for photos. It ended up being the busiest corner of the night — colleagues, neighbours and grandchildren all queued up for a picture, and more than one guest admitted it made them feel like the occasion was official. A Few Nice Touches Worth Copying
- A memory table: old photos and a guestbook where colleagues wrote down their favourite stories from the job.
- String lighting inside the marquee: turned a plain white ceiling into something warm once the sun went down.
- A relaxed buffet table instead of a formal sit-down meal, so guests could mingle freely between the marquee and the garden.
- Extra glassware on hand for the inevitable string of toasts — nobody wants to be caught short mid-speech.
Why a Marquee Made Sense
Retirement parties tend to draw a real mix of guests — former colleagues, neighbours, family from Kilkenny and Portlaoise who travelled in for the day — and a marquee meant nobody had to squeeze into a front room or worry about rain cutting the night short. It also gave the family flexibility on numbers right up until the week of the party, which took a lot of pressure off the planning.
